The Feds’ Position On Medical Pot: Organic = Bad, Organix = Good; Any Questions?

  • by Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director June 2, 2009

Marijuana chemical may slow multiple sclerosis
    via insciences.org

Armed with a $1.5 million National Institutes of Health grant, Temple researchers are studying more effective ways to treat multiple sclerosis. And their research utilizes synthetic cannabinoids based on chemicals derived from the marijuana plant.

… Using a compound (O-1996) synthesized by scientists at the Medical College of Virginia and the company Organix, Tuma and Ganea performed animal studies and found that the synthesized chemical affected cannabinoid receptors present primarily on immune cells.

… “This is a totally new approach to treating this disease, “says Adler, director emeritus and senior advisor for CSAR and Laura H. Carnell professor of pharmacology research. “These cannabinoids hold enormous potential, and that’s encouraging since we’re limited in options when it comes to preventing or reversing MS.”

Okay, follow along with me if you can.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health appropriates over one million dollars to fund medical research — not to investigate the therapeutic effects of natural cannabinoids (bad!), but rather to investigate the therapeutic effects of synthetic chemicals (good!) that are designed to mimic the effects of natural cannabinoids.

Equally ironically, the research is taking place at Temple University in Pennsylvania — where any use of natural cannabis (bad!) as a medicine is criminally illegal, but where research into the use  faux cannabis (good!) is embraced.

Makes sense, right? Well about as much sense as the federal government claiming that pot (bad!) has no medical utility while simultaneously patenting certain natural occurring chemicals in the plant — those that the Feds hope to one day profit from (good!) — as, you guessed it, a medicine.

    Any questions?

The Government disgusts me more everyday when it comes to this issue. You are all right, it is time for action. Check out what this 17 year old kid did below. He has balls of steel, although most of us adults couldn’t do something like this due to our responsibilities (kids, wife, etc…) we can get active, write, call, donate, rally, boycott, whatever is necessary for legalization. Now here’s the story.

Well, this one certainly takes some guts. A 17 year old at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, WA, was giving a presentation during a monthly class called “Rhetoric Revels.” His topic? Legalizing marijuana. At the end of the presentation, in order to make a point, he pulled out a joint and smoked it in front of the class! He ate what remained of the joint (getting rid of the evidence?) and was immediately sent to the principal’s office. From there it was off to juvenile hall.

According to the Tacoma News Tribune, some of his classmates supported his actions, but school officials certainly didn’t. “We believe in freedom of speech and encourage it, but illegal activities are absolutely not going to be tolerated in our district,” schools Superintendent Terry Bouck told the Tribune.

About 120 students were in attendance when the pro-pot presentation was given. All the students were in 11th grade. No one was expecting the final flourish from the boy, who has a 3.7 GPA, but many other students thought the presentation was well presented and may have changed some minds in the audience.

When this inevitably gets picked up by national media, it will be interesting to see the reaction. If nothing else, he gets an A for creativity!

    13. To the President, Congress, Senate, Governors, and all other elected officials and law enforcement agencies of the United States of America:
We are the people of the United States. It is by the labor of our hands and the sweat of our brows that this great nation continues to live and thrive. From the captains of industry to the civil servants – we are male and female – we are every color, race, creed and religion. We are even agnostic and atheist. As Americans that is our constitutional right. We pay the taxes that fund every program and agency that keeps our country alive. We raise our families, build our communities, and are the very lifeblood of the civilization that we call the Western Culture. And millions of us use Marijuana.
Some use it for medicine, some for recreation, and some for both. But what you have turned a blind eye to is that the role of government is to protect us from our enemies, not from ourselves! If an adult chooses to drink, or smoke, or toke – it is none of your business. In comparison to the use of alcohol and tobacco, an individual that uses Marijuana violates no ones civil rights – harms no one – and brings no burden to bear upon society. The burden upon American citizens is the prohibition of Marijuana itself. We have declared for over 70 years that the war on drugs is a war on the people of this nation.
And yet our government – elected by we the people to act as our representatives, to ensure our rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, have consistently turned a deaf ear to us for over 70 years. You have been purchased by the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Pharmaceutical lobbyists.
You have consistently ignored the scientific and medical facts concerning the immense benefits of quite possible the greatest plant that exists on our planet. You have systematically put forth lies, propaganda, and misinformation concerning Marijuana to the American public for the dual purpose of continuing your endless supply of wealth received from the masters who own you – and to exert control over the very people you are supposed to be serving.
Our founding fathers believed that people should not fear their government – that instead government should fear the people. For when a government begins to ignore the will and rights and voice of its citizens, then Liberty and Freedom become nothing more than hollow words. And the greatest document written since the Magna Carta, our very own Declaration of Independence, tells us that, “But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them (the people) under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.”
All Liberty begins with an act of defiance. Our defiance towards all who insist on treating us as criminals has begun. It will not cease. We will not and are not going away. Our new revolution will and has begun in every hamlet, town, and city in this nation. You can silence us and ignore us and mock us no more. We are not the dregs of society, as you seem to think. We are educated, informed, and we VOTE. Your records will be viewed closely. We will take note and remember those of you in office who continues to subjugate the American citizen and seek to further your campaign of moral control – and we will vote you out of office. No despot or tyrant can stand before the cannons of true liberty and freedom. Not when aimed by the hand of truth.

The system has become too much of a mess; nobody has any integrity anymore.

There is a part of me that really wants to believe that there are people out there that want to serve their country and make things better.

Unfortunately, probably 90+ percent (or more) of all elected officials in our Federal government are the result of abortions that never happened and are too stupid to do anything useful with their lives that will actually help their fellow man. . .all they care about is power & re-election. . .they have no principles and don’t give a fuck about anyone but themselves. Period.

These people have forgotten that THEY work for US (not the other way around)!! Fortunately, there is a congressional election next year and all of us that are on the verge of unleashing our frustration and fury will get a chance at the ballot box.

Frankly, I love the lawsuit idea!! If nothing else, it should be a CLASS ACTION suit. Just think of the exposure and publicity. I”m sure a lot of the “sheeple” out there would probably write it off like they did with the TEA Parties back in April, but it’s a perfectly justifiable lawsuit; our government has repeatedly lied to us, stolen from us and taken advantage of us so much that it has become the norm.

This is OUR country. And it’s time to take OUR country back!

      LEGALIZE CANNABIS and OUTLAW SLAVERY!!!

I have studied the war on drugs for years ever since a drug task force raided my home on an anonymous tip. They found nothing but I felt violated having eight armed men in my house looking for cannabis plants. Being 60 and retired this amazed me and I started reading about the war on US (drugs). It is all there to see if you read you know it it a scam.

Today I realize that it is all for greed. The major pharmaceutical companies yearly take in about 681 billion dollars selling their foul chemical drugs. Many that do more harm than good. But the FDA seems to be in their pocket. They fight and spend millions every year to insure cannabis is kept illegal. Doctors in California, were cannabis has been legal since 1996, say it could replace up to 80% of the chemicals the legal drug pushers sell. That would mean a loss of 544 billion to the legal pharmaceutical guys. This is why they pay our representatives millions every year. Our representatives vote and fight to continue sacrificing our lives to insure the millions keep coming.

Because the war affects mainly the poor people of color and does not affect them or their family (they are above the law) they continue to destroy almost one million lives a year just to insure their PAC check clears. If you doubt what I say go and do you own research its all there to see….

I do not fear the cartels in Mexico I fear our own representatives. They have sacrifice the lives of 20 million Americans so far to keep this herb from being used. Why? you can grow it yourself its a weed and how are they going to make their billions off a weed? They have bribed our lawmakers to allow them to produce Marinol a synthetic THC but will still advocate jailing Americans to protect their profits.

Check it out the Drug Free America Foundation Inc. is backed by the legal drug guys to insure they demonize a weed. You can also go to sites that will show you your elected lawmaker and how much money they take from the legal drug guys. They also take money under the table. I have heard of lawmakers selling houses to the ones that need help for many times what the house is worth. Like Mcsame he thinks he owns seven houses not sure that is why they can do many things to launder money. The cartels could learn from them…

Oh the wisdom of mankind! Cannabinoids in their natural state are bad for our individual and collective health and well being. BUT, let us remanufacture them with a hundred different chemicals that are known to be toxic and we will create a perfectly safe from of medicine. BULL****! With that in mind, what kinds of addictive and toxic substances will the fed manufacture from marijuana? How can they believe that any substance in a highly concentrated form is going to be less harmfull than its natural form when even salt, the spice of life, becomes toxic when taken in concentration? To my knowledge, no one has ever overdosed on THC no matter how they consume it. So, go ahead congress, concentrate it and mix it with man-made toxic chemicals and put it in a form that can be easily consumed in huge doses; [i.e. a fistfull of pills], that will become harmfull even as salt does.

      P. S. When are they going to outlaw poppies because they have natural opiates which are known to be addictive and fatal in large doses?

This is one American who is sick of a bunch of tobacco addicts in congress telling me, a non-smoker, what I can and cannot do with my body. I’m not the one here using an addictive drug!

This website went from being cool
to being a whiny soap box forum.

      - We know the benefits of Cannabis,
hence why we r writing our reps and such.
Publicly complaining to people who already know
is pretty stupid for a major organization.

      - Focus that energy on really doing something other
than interviews and writing articles and maybe
this issue will be taken seriously
instead of being swept under the rug because
all we do is whine about it afterwards.

      RE:

It’s also a place to practice, hone and refine our writing and fact-finding skills
      regarding the truth about Cannabis.

      - Contacting our reps and public officials is essential,
however we MUST ALSO be able to do so in the most
      LITERATE, CONCISE, PROFESSIONAL and IRREFUTABLE manner possible;

      - Respectfully addressing genuine concerns and objections,
      as well as neutralizing oft-repeated ‘drug-war’ fallacies / false-analogies
BEFORE they’re even mentioned in the recipient’s potentially-skeptical
and / or dismissive reply / response.

      - Even though WE know the many benefits of Cannabis…
these facts must be presented in a way that is perceived as
incontrovertibly-credible to those whom we share this information with…

      “Pharmacy”
      is Greek…

      Pharmakeia
is a Greek word that appears several times in the New Testament, including the Epistle to the Galatians and the Book of Revelation. It is frequently translated as “witchcraft” or “sorcery.” The English word “pharmaceutical” is derived from the same root as this word. The admonitions against it in the Bible are often used as the basis of claims that mind-altering drug use is sinful, as the ancient pagans used hallucinogens in their sorcery.

Further, and earlier schools of thought have understood the warning against Pharmakeia to be a ban on oral contraceptives that were in use at the time.
