If Pot Prevented Cancer You Would Have Read About It, Right?

Two influential websites — The Hill.com’s Congress blog and the Huffington Post — have provided me with a platform to report on the contrasting impact of alcohol and cannabis on cancer. If Pot Prevented Cancer You Would Have Read About It, Right?
via TheHill.comTwo just published studies assessing adults’ risk of cancer have reported wildly divergent, and fairly extraordinary, outcomes. One study you may have read about. The other has been ignored entirely by the mainstream media.
… First, the study you may have heard of. Writing August 3 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, investigators at McGill University in Montreal reported that moderate alcohol consumption–defined as six drinks or less per week–by adults is positively associated with an elevated risk of various cancers including stomach cancer, rectal cancer, and bladder cancer.
And now for the study you haven’t heard of. Writing in the August issue of the journal Cancer Prevention Research, investigators from Rhode Island’s Brown University along with researchers at Boston University, Louisiana State University, and the University of Minnesota reported that that lifetime marijuana use is associated with a “significantly reduced risk” of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
As I’ve written previously, both on this blog and elsewhere, for 35 years the federal government has been well aware –- yet publicly denied –- that cannabis possesses potent anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties. Even under the Obama administration, which promised to “base [their] public policies on the soundest of science,” the myth that pot promotes cancer persists. In fact, the White House’s website, whitehousedrugpolicy.gov, presently warns, “Marijuana has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract.”
Of course, this myth persists in large part because the mainstream media rarely if ever pays attention to studies that could be seen as in any way undermining criminal prohibition. (In some cases, the MSM even goes so far as to erroneously report about those that do.) So it’s hardly surprising that in the three week span since the Brown University study was published, not one mainstream media outlet has reported its findings. (Full disclosure: over the past days I have personally communicated with several prominent newspapers’ writers about this study — in each case providing them with the full text of the investigators’ findings — but have yet to received any positive feedback beyond the obligatory “We’ll look into it.”)
Will the promotion of these findings in prominent alt-media outlets like The Hill and Huff Po reverse the MSM’s complacency? Perhaps — and your feedback to both sites can only help. So chime in (**Note: comments on both sites are moderated), and tell the MSM that it’s time for us to stop having to do their job!

Imagine that! thier study didnt show what they wanted!
I left a post on the hill. I was polite, still dont think it will be posted due to the fact Im not a politicain.
And in thelight of this truth, they(our leaders)will still deny its safer than alcxohol and cigs. I hope the people get so fed up with our leaders they vote them all out! Or at least ask them to leave office…nice to dream.
why not start a petition to cc off to (user chosen) Mainstream Media outlets, such as a local news stations and favorite national news stations.
… i just reread that. please excuse the obvious fail in grammer and spelling.
“…lifetime marijuana use is associated with a ‘significantly reduced risk’ of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.”
Say yes to democratized medicine with cannabis.
Paul as im sure your a bright guy,the fact that the MSM wont touch this isnt really a surprise to many of us.The fact that this is HUGE news to many in the cannabis realm it just doesnt sell newspapers and it just doesnt present some gloom and doom scenario which is what the MSM seems only to print anymore.Im sure you noticed the headlines lately when that lady who was drunk killed nine people and how they constantly said she had cannabis in her system ,those are the only stories they are interested in talking about.Thank goodness for the internet and blogs like the HILL and huffpo where at least we can get some kind of truth out there about cannabis.
I’m definitely fed up with the MSM, I’m not sure if any of you have seen that new show “The Doctors”, its basically a panel of Dr.’s that provide health advice to an audience made up of basically the Oprah demographic.
Well my mom was watching it this afternoon and they were attempting to explain why marijuana is so dangerous.
They’re best argument was to cite a new scientific study claiming that maryjane promotes testicular cancer in males. And I loosely quote, “Not only does it promote cancer but the most deadly form of cancer for adult males…” Does anyone know which study they are referring to? Is this an accurate statement to make?
And to save face they ended the segment by saying that it does have medicinal purposes for patients with AIDS and cancer, but recreationally it is “too dangerous”.
All I could say to myself is I’ll never get my health information from a TV show. Its just sad because so many families will watch this show and take what these “Doctors” say as fact even though they are ignoring the hundreds of other scientific studies out there promoting the health benefits of marijuana.
What a shame…
Not all mainstream media is ignoring the issue. I watched Bill Maher and Brad Pitt Talking about legalizing cannabis. He brings it up quite frequently. I’m not sure how many people watch his show but it must be a lot because HBO keeps him on.
How in the world they can get away with lieing every single breath about Cannabis just befuddles the shit out of me!!!!!
Prohibitionists would rather people die of cancer than get high from consuming cannabis. Prohibitionists are just funny like that.
Hey I was just wondering what your thoughts were on all this new talk about marijauna causing testicular cancer. It just bothers me so much how they single us out.

cannabis FTW!
This seems like Djavu hasnt this been disscussed already? I dont think the media wants to pay attention to the facts, they like to hear the myths on how bad it is for ya, altho if u go to the HighTimes homepage 4 today it says somthin about legalizing all drugs,i dont agree on tht cuz most of those r man made/can die first time u even try it,ne way something tht grows frm the ground should definiately NOT b illegal
Is there anything that pot CAN’T do?!?!!
What are the Powers That Be so afraid of? Oh, wait, pharmaceuticals that produce drugs that cause diabetes and come with a ton of other side effecgts not to mention withdrawal symptoms and risk of death from overdose would stand to have some stiff competition if the truth were let out of the bag.
cmon…. seriously… if marijuana was legalized and available for study by anyone, think of all the breakthroughs we would have… think of all the money that could be taken away from big pharma, big oil, lumber industry, cotton industry, big governments crime industry…you like that huh?….. hey Barack Obama, your all for competition to “keep them honest” and keep prices down and fair. so why not this?… oh yea, because all those industries that will be hurt have their own lobbyists and make “campaign contributions” aka bribes…….
Great article, I sent a link to the blog’s page to around 10 major news sites and papers…
im glad you guys are getting at the anti- cancer properties of cannabis. My grandma could use some oil to heal her wounds.I Want the right to make the very potent oil that can cure cancer.Rich simpson is doing it in canada.Look him up on you-tube.People need this IN EVERY STATE.When states have medical marijuana you can even have a pound legally to make this potent oil..Who does that leave up to making a pound amount of cannabis into 2 ounces of hemp oil? Some people made need more to completely heal themselves..So when states have medical marijuana there still not curing the cancer.Ya get me?
[Editor's note: NORML has been covering cannabis and cancer for years. Currently, however, there are no published scientific, peer-reviewed reports that claim potent cannabis oil cures 'cancer'.]
i meant cant ^ u get me.Hi people.
How dare
How dare MSM withold such valuable information from us! (added by Mobile using Mippin)
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times, some shall … speak lies in hypocrisy … commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

George Orwell
Can someone tell me what MSM is?
[Editor's note: Mainstream Media]
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men:
for ye neither go in yourselves,
neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
— Matt., 23:13
Uh…
This article only states two reduced risk cancers, how about ALL of the other cancers that can be caused by pot. Lame article. Plus you’re saying “investigators” but do not name WHO these investigators are! They could be lay idiots who promote pot and not true scientists.
Unfortunately, what only gets reported is what will fit someone’s agenda who has deep pockets or political interests, unwavering from vaporous “mainstream” ideals.
Even though the our cause is gaining favor among Americans, media networks and corporations have images to uphold that, if they began to report positively on Cannabis, people would lose jobs and the networks would lose ad sponsors, etc.
It’s a crux that by its business nature, we will have to overcome with our own outreach in reporting. Change won’t come through the media, but rather only use it as a vehicle. Until bureaucracy gives up its shotgun seat, misinformation and popular agenda will continue to blindly drive any “green media coverage.” It’s saddening, but don’t be discouraged, peaceful people!
So… not only can I not legally do something that makes my aches and pains from the accident i was in go away without taking manufactured narcotics….BUT… now I also cannot enjoy my favorite herb that also has cancer retarding properties as well? ? ?
Thanks Big Brother.
If pot had such potential you would think it would be a no brainer to legalize it wouldn’t you? Think again. The federal government has been aware of these facts for years. They also know something the public does not. Pot doesn’t just slow cancer, it CURES it. Federal researches discovered that marijuana can cure just about any given illness. Terminal or not. Upon discovering that marijuana is indeed the only medicine humans would ever need, the feds became fearful that they would lose their partnerships with various drug companies. The federal government was threatened by drug exec’s on several occasions. The feds do not want to lose these evil partnerships. The feds have found that they can profit heavily off of the sick. As long as they keep their mouth shut about the cure. Drug companies actually have partial ownership over the federal government. Drug companies are richer and more powerful then the USA could ever hope to be. Therefore they control cannabis policy not the feds. These drug companies would serve no purpose if people relied on nature instead of them. Drug companies are unbreakable. They have more of a say of what goes on in this country then the president himself. The only thing that could ever change this is if the people wake up and refuse to buy pharmacudicals. Pot must become popular by the majority, not the minority. As of now, only 45% of USA support legalization. Even when it is 75% pot will still not be legal. When support reaches 100%, the government will try it’s best to come up wth a new lie. Perhaps they will tell us the truth? Either way war will follow. The winners will decide the future of cannabis. It sounds crazy but it’s true. Just wait and see. I will reveal a more frightening truth, when the war starts, the USA and their allies will put forth a world wide effort to destroy marijuana users. It will be the worst thing since the holocost. The law will not exclude the young, nor women nor children. The government will do ANYTHING to protect their cash cow. Allot of people will call me crazy but i can live with that. I support NORML 110%, but there is no non violent solution on either side. The government will try and kill us off before they legalize weed. Sounds unlikely now, but soon when america enters world war 3 they will need all the soldiers they can get. By this time over 75% of the world will oppose US forces. The US government will blame the lack of youth military support on cannabis, and the draft will be reinstated. They will blame the drug for blinding americas youth during a time of war and then users will be executed by the thousands under martial law. Its a sad prophecy. I hope im wrong. This is classified information, but rest assured it is only a matter of time before the public finds out. For now we can call this a conspiracy theory.
[Editor's note: Pot doesn’t just slow cancer, it CURES it. Federal researches discovered that marijuana can cure just about any given illness. Terminal or not. Upon discovering that marijuana is indeed the only medicine humans would ever need, the feds became fearful that they would lose their partnerships with various drug companies.
Thanks for your post, but it is replete with factual errors: Cannabis has not been proven to "cure cancer", federal researchers have not discovered that cannabis can cure any given illness and there is ZERO place for violence to achieve social change. Women, Blacks and Gay/Lesbian causes have succeeded without violence--and so is cannabis law reform.]
Obama promised honesty in his presidency. Now it is time for us to demand he keep his word. I have not heard any effort to insure the truth is brought to light…

My mother died as a result of cancer and my father has also recently undergone a procedure to remove tumors from his brain. My Grandfather died as a result of testicular cancer. All my life starting around 14 years of age I have smoked Cannabis. I have always felt that smoking herb reduced high levels of stress that most of us in society have to cope with. Science has in the past looked into the relationship between high levels of stress and how that affects an individuals chances of being affected by some form of cancer, not to mention the other countless substances that can cause cancer. I am now 38 years old and feel stronger than when I was a teen or in my 20′s. I also eat healthier now and excercise more than in the past. My fear of dying of cancer is greater than anything the State of Texas or the Federal government can do to me for smoking MARIJUANA. Anyone who has ever been through this illnes or has had a close relative affected by it would agree that it is one of the most horrendous things that can affect one of our own citizens. Marijuana is my preventive care. This is my Health Care Plan. J. Velasco
Some interesting comments over at the Hill. Come on people, use the chime in link and leave your comment.
geez. i posted 8:24 am and now it’s 3:02pm and nothing? from anyone? the tread about caining a pot smoker was lit up like a christmas tree with outrage but a topic such as this, to our benefit, as a bonus ontop of what we already enjoy about Mj as well as more ammunition in our collective quest to get it legalized isn’t worth 3 seconds of anyones time (that posted on the “Caning threads”) to comment? WoW.
Makes me sad reading articles like this. Government has been lying to us for so many years and even now with all this evidence piling up, they still denying that marijuana has many medicinal applications. When will this end already? When are we going to have a government decent enough to come clean and apologize for lying and creating unjust policies? Ok, forget apologies. Just do what’s right, legalize marijuana for responsible adults and I think we can all call it even.
I believe our corporate-tocracy could give a rat’s flying ass about our health. See article below for new medical condition “orthorexia nervosa” for those having consciousness about what they put in their body.
Makes me wonder if there is soon to be a new medical condition for all those people who support the freeing of the Cannabis plant? Beware of the new “dictatorial science” that the “powers to be” want us to believe in.
Healthy food obsession sparks rise in new eating disorder
Fixation with healthy eating can be sign of serious psychological disorder

Eating disorder charities are reporting a rise in the number of people suffering from a serious psychological condition characterised by an obsession with healthy eating.
The condition, orthorexia nervosa, affects equal numbers of men and women, but sufferers tend to be aged over 30, middle-class and well-educated.
The condition was named by a Californian doctor, Steven Bratman, in 1997, and is described as a “fixation on righteous eating”. Until a few years ago, there were so few sufferers that doctors usually included them under the catch-all label of “Ednos” – eating disorders not otherwise recognised. Now, experts say, orthorexics take up such a significant proportion of the Ednos group that they should be treated separately.
“I am definitely seeing significantly more orthorexics than just a few years ago,” said Ursula Philpot, chair of the British Dietetic Association’s mental health group. “Other eating disorders focus on quantity of food but orthorexics can be overweight or look normal. They are solely concerned with the quality of the food they put in their bodies, refining and restricting their diets according to their personal understanding of which foods are truly ‘pure’.”
Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out.
The obsession about which foods are “good” and which are “bad” means orthorexics can end up malnourished. Their dietary restrictions commonly cause sufferers to feel proud of their “virtuous” behaviour even if it means that eating becomes so stressful their personal relationships can come under pressure and they become socially isolated.
“The issues underlying orthorexia are often the same as anorexia and the two conditions can overlap but orthorexia is very definitely a distinct disorder,” said Philpot. “Those most susceptible are middle-class, well-educated people who read about food scares in the papers, research them on the internet, and have the time and money to source what they believe to be purer alternatives.”
Deanne Jade, founder of the National Centre for Eating Disorders, said: “There is a fine line between people who think they are taking care of themselves by manipulating their diet and those who have orthorexia. I see people around me who have no idea they have this disorder. I see it in my practice and I see it among my friends and colleagues.”
Jade believes the condition is on the increase because “modern society has lost its way with food”. She said: “It’s everywhere, from the people who think it’s normal if their friends stop eating entire food groups, to the trainers in the gym who [promote] certain foods to enhance performance, to the proliferation of nutritionists, dieticians and naturopaths [who believe in curing problems through entirely natural methods such as sunlight and massage].
“And just look in the bookshops – all the diets that advise eating according to your blood type or metabolic rate. This is all grist for the mill to those looking for proof to confirm or encourage their anxieties around food.”
Maybe if prohibs put their fingers in their ears and say LA LA LA LA really loud then the truth will go away.
okay since it is a study, i am all for it but we do have to put out there that bob marley, the famous musician, died from toe cancer and from what I’ve read, he always smoked. of coarse still pro-marijuana use for cancer but he died from it so…
[Editor's note: Robert Nesta Marley did not die because he smoked heavy amounts of cannabis. He died because of acral lentiginous melanoma, where he refused to have his 'infected' toe removed, and refused all conventional medical treatment because of his religious beliefs.]

I recently read “Bad Science” by Ben Goldacre. It’s mainly a book on more “normal” health issues and the bad science perpetrated among a variety of professions (from the scientists themselves forgetting the scientific method to politicians to journalists).
One thing that struck me as particularly relevant in his book was that a lot of the health scares seems to have followed a very horrible pattern.
Usually the science stuff is covered by fairly reasonable science journalists that would in fact recognize the scientific method if it “danced naked in front of them”.
However, when something got scary, scandalous and/or had moral panic elements the subject seemed to be covered mainly by generalist journalists. Those are unfortunately often lacking the skills to evaluate a scientific research paper. Thus they rely more on “who’s who” and stuff like that, and their reporting makes science look random, capricious and based on social standing.
He’s a cool guy. Though from Britain he might be interested and if he writes something it’ll probably end up on his blog or in The Guardian. Website here: http://www.badscience.net/
(PS: his book does have a chapter on the silly pot potency claim – which he totally demolishes.)
I firmly believe that the use of cannabis in moderation
is very good for our bodies and immune systems, likewise Anything in excess can be detrimental to our health. Cannabis aswell as other hullucogenic substances Can open the door for people to realise the trappings and pitfalls our modern day world provides . I recommend the book FOOD OF THE GODS to anyone interested in learning more about how natural hallucinogenics in conjunction with the appropraite envirnment and rituals can allow for awesome trancsendant experiances. excuse my enthusiasm .
Policies based on science, that is a blatant lie. There are more than enough studies to support legalization. When will our puppet president grow a pair and, stop pandering to the money? Not anytime soon I bet. Vote him out! Using federal resources to screw with sick and dying people in medical states will stop. Yeah sure they will, vote him out! We have been duped again my friends. Drug Czar my ass, just another mouthpiece for prohibition. The majority of our politicians are no more than organized crime bosses and thugs, vote them all out when they do not represent the folks who put them in office, vote them out, the sooner the better. Anytime a huge issue is pushed to be passed into law, like yesterday already, there are a large number of citizens these tactics make very nervous, and rightly so. This health care reform has stirred up alot of people. to rush this legislation through is not only irresponsible it is close to criminal. My dad died of cancer, believing everything the government ever put out on cannabis. To him it was as bad as heroine, he simply believed his leaders. Guess I’m more like my mother on this one. Everything the government gets involed with turns into a major cluster f@#k. Take insurance for example, now insurance companies are deeply involed in lobbying and fringe benefits for lawmakers. I feel this has more to do with mandatory insurance laws than anything else period. That is just my personal opinion, but I’m sure I’m not alone on that one. Legalize cannabis and it will surely help many with all sorts of issues, medical costs will drop at least a notable amount. Probably much more than just notable. Yes it will cut into profits of some very large companies and individuals, no doubt. Cannabis will reduce profits on some fronts, but will create new opportunities on others. It’s all about money folks, the government knew from the start so called marijuana was harmless, policies are based on racial issues and greed, mostly greed. The racial thing was just a bonus. Truth be known Cannabis should be part of our diets as well as medicine. Even my dogs, with limited intelligence know this. They will eat weed, if anyone fires up some, they will enter the area and suck up second hand smoke. No they do not particulary like smoke blown in there face, there are exceptions to that also. My taco bell dog would practically beg for it and at times be quite adamant about claiming her share. Oh I guess it was in her genes afterall she was spainish. I do miss her, even in her old age she was much more active than most younger dogs. By the way she died from being attacked by a 90 lb. pitbull. It wasn’t the pitbulls fault, she is very sweet and allowed the little mexican to torment her for years, little fart thought she was a pit too. Moral of the story, we are the taco dog, our government a fighting pitbull (very much unlike mine) we are increasingly becomeing more of a pain for them. Be very carefull, they are coming after us. Look around, new prisons popping up like spring flowers, law enforcement virtually out of control, (yes, even now there are some good cops but they are being marginnalized by the rouges), government sees the masses are seeing through their 70+ years of lies, there is a renewed attack on growers users and anyone associated with cannabis. They are close to panic, what happens when you corner a mad dog, you are quite likely to get bitten or killed. Be very careful folks! We must keep fighting, we must not waiver from our mission, but we must be very very careful. Our government is like a rabid animal, and we are making louder and louder noises, they are coming for us in more ways than in the past, technology is great, so was the invention of gun powder, just depends how it’s used. Do not think they care about you, your family , or your rights as U.S. citizens, do not be complacent, watch your back, your neighbors back and especially the backs of your family members. Do I sound paranoid? Maybe a little, maybe a lot, I think history should be enough proof. Protect and serve has become, harrass and imprison. Any mistakes in spelling or grammer are entirely mine, and I apologize. After 12 years of Roberts english that was crammed down my throat, it was determined to be flawed, and replaced. Lets do the same with prohibition laws, blue laws. Careful friends, they are watching! They are coming! later!!

RE: Hylton,
Your enthusiasm is excused!!! And re-iterated!!!
- If all the scientific facts about natural-hallucinogenics
were widely known, it would be obviously-evident that
these compounds are INTEGRAL to normal cerebral-neurochemistry.
- May I share with you, the immortal words of one
of my finest-HEROES and science-champion;
late Swiss cerebral-chemistry researcher…
Albert Hofmann
( 11-Apr-1906 ~~ 29-Apr-2008 )
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`
“I think that the possibility to have
psychedelic experience is inborn.
These psychedelics – very similar compounds are in our brain;
of all the compounds which you find in the plant kingdom,
only the psychedelics are so closely related chemically
to these brain factors, which we already have.
- We speak about the paradise of childhood.
When I had this vision and beautiful experience as a child,
this is no wonder,
because we have these compounds already in our brain.”
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`
THE INTEGRAL and INTERACTIVE ROLES of
CANNABINOIDS and TRYPTAMINES:
- The existence of the body’s endocannabinoid-system has already
been established, however, the full role of the brain’s serotonergic-system,
its interaction with both cannabinoids and botanical indole-based compounds
has been wrongly, erroneously kept obscure through ignorance, neglect
and outright obfuscation, long after the days of Dr. Hofmann’s discoveries and research.
- Far from being “foreign substances”, the plant-derived indoles are
also found in the brain, (as part of circadian-metabolism), secreted
by the pineal-gland.
- The most well known and recognized of these is the sleep-wakefulness
neuro-regulator, melatonin. The pineal also produces other tryptamines,
(ones noted for enhancing awareness and slowing the apparent-passage of time,
also hypothesized to be responsible for the biochemical-basis of dreaming).
- Though the word “hallucinogen” is the common blanket-terminology for
for numerous compounds that enhance visualization-ability, awareness and
sometimes cause slight visual-distortions, the word “hallucinogen” is actually
a misnomer when used to describe cannabinoids and indoles,
because these compounds do not produce hallucinations
“indistinguishable from reality”, (only anti-cholinergics do that…),
but rather, makes open-eyed reality appear more VIVID, VIBRANT, CLEARER,
(as it was when one was younger), and improves one’s ability to visualize
their thoughts, (the ABILITY to IMAGINE, the ABILITY to DREAM!!!).
- BTW:
- Cerebral tryptamine-levels decrease as one gets older;
THE compounds ALSO found in certain awareness-enhancing plants.
- Indoles, including melatonin and other tryptamines,
have anti-oxidant and cancer-preventative properties…
- It is known that the sleepiness sometimes produced by cannabis is
due to its ability to increase serum and cerebral melatonin levels.
- Likewise, the vibrancy and awareness-enhancement also produced,
is caused by release of other tryptamines related to melatonin.
