Coffee and Weed!

  • by Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director October 11, 2009

I don’t drink coffee. But, the appeal of cannabis and coffee is abundantly clear from Amsterdam to Oaksterdam.

NORML supporters, professional comedians and apparent wake-n-bakers Rob Cantrell and Arj Barker sing the praises of one of the world’s most beloved, but largely undisclosed ‘drug’ combination, in their new high-definition video ‘Coffee and Weed!‘ [Warning: adult language and imagery is employed]:

Notice some of the interesting cameos from notable Brooklynites! This song is from Rob’s new album ‘Stay on the grass!

Hahaha. Classic, even for a weed song!

    2. amee says:

      Wow! That was great. LOL!

    3. AP says:

Please take this video down! It is not supportive of NORML’s cause or cause of the majority of NORML’s members!

It is offensive, inappropriate, and irresponsible. Yes, the drug combination noted is favorable over most (if not all) others available to the general public, but NORML’s website is not the proper venue for the the extraneous messages in this video.

Please leave it to YouTube, and not on NORML!

    4. Jack Skellington says:

Im not sure why you posted this. could someone please let me know.

    5. mike graham says:

ridiculously STUPID!! nothing to help the cause!!!

    6. Don E says:

Cannabis is a wonderful companion spirit. It can enhance one’s appreciation of just about anything else…but it is primarily, for me, at its best when it can interact with the inner self without the distraction of other substances.

    9. patrick says:

:) noone makes songs about shooting up, make Marijuana legal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    10. David says:

      Yes!

I looooooooooooove coffee and weed in the morning. This video, not so much (the rapping’s not that great), but I love a good wake ‘n bake.

Why do I love this combo so much? The two substances work in synergy with each other. Coffee keeps me warm and alert while the weed keeps me happy and level headed, exactly where I want to be. It helps create the perfect mindset for me to start my day.

It’s the warmest, fuzziest feel good feeling I know.

    11. Mark J Kemper says:

I think this video damages the reputation of NORML and severely hurts the cause for legalization/decriminalization of marijuana.

If we are ever going to succeed in legalization, then we need to portray an image of responsibility when using marijuana. This video reenforces the stereotype that smoking marijuana leads to irresponsibility and amotivation, definitely not an image which supports our cause.

What if an undecided legislator or politician is doing research for his/her vote and comes to NORML’s website and sees this video? What do you think the outcome would be. Please remove this video. Its hurting our cause!

[Editor's note: Lighten up! Do you really think a single video displayed for one day on NORML's webpage 'severely hurts the cause'? Do you think so-called undecided politicians are sitting around on a Sunday, wondering about the 70 years of cannabis prohibition they've been supporting, decide they need to do some 'research' on NORML's webpage, discover a well-produced making fun of cannabis prohibition...and decide to keep supporting cannabis prohibition?

You're right, NORML better take down the video or cannabis prohibition may never end....]

    12. General-Jake says:

This is hilarious. Im drinkin coffee goin thru the news
when i light my first bowlski of the day and pop over to noml only to see coffee and weed! Now i know my day will kick ass. (Which by the way to all prohibitionists, my coffee is way more addictive than my weed which isint at all)

    13. Rodin says:

I am actually working on a speech down here in Florida about how coffee (caffeine) and most gum with nutra-sweet are much worse for your body than cannabis..and they are sold to adolescents.

    14. bb54 says:

I cant wait for stores like “Second Puff” and “Bud depot” and “Starbuds” to open.
What’s the bud of the day ?

    15. gene says:

      So, who are those “Brooklynites”?

    16. Jed The head says:

That was some very funny shit! I think most people in that age group will easily identify with these guys. It’s how their generation grew up. You gotta love it.

    17. Seriously? says:

This is funny but it doesn’t help the movement. I thought NORML would be more professional.

[Editor's note: Even professional cannabis reformers enjoy levity every now and then...]

    18. samson says:

Entertaining, at the least……sterio-typical at a glance. HOWEVER, Bravo man. Every effort helps.

    19. CKDK29 says:

      That was different,but good

    20. Lea says:

Can hardly wait to read what other commenters have to say about this post.
It’s not my cup of tea, however, whatever it takes to rid our world of Prohibition is fine with me.

    21. mntnman444 says:

Gee, I’d love to try it but I’m afraid I might get hooked…on the bean.

    22. mmmm…blunts and cappachino…numm numm’s.

    23. It is saddening to think of how many Police Officials have given their lives in order to protect people . Regretfully , there are those officers that are crippled lying in bed right now unable to move because they put their lives on the line defending people just like you and i .

THIS IS NOT A WAR AGAINST THE POLICE

THIS IS A WAR AGAINST SATAN the DEVIL

The drug testing kit was the greatest tool used to deceive the people by the great Satan into making you believe marijuana is bad when in fact Alcohol , prescription drugs & tobacco ( their man – made
drugs ) kill more people & health problems than all the other drugs do combined .

Satan lusts for Power , greed for money and treasures of this earth . ” Man will worship his image & the things he made “.Marijuana is a gift from God and Satan has deceived the Whole World . He’s cleverly used the Drug testing kit to deceive many .Those that lust after money , use deception , greed for power to rule the World are that of the Great Devil – SATAN .

It is written ; One of Satan’s greatest tools is DECEPTION …..
….. “the great dragon , called the Devil and Satan …WHO DECEIVES THE WHOLE WORLD” .

Laugh at me as you will .

SATAN is a master of Deception .

      Revelation 12 ; 9

    24. Correction ; cause health problems .

Their drugs don’t show up in the Drug test .

      Marijuana does .

    25. David says:

Yeah Yeah, Represent! Brooklyn STAND UP! LOL Oh man, I was just talking to my Mom about how I would love to make some Latte at the house and blaze a phat ass joint; nothing BETTER! LOL Great Combo and Super FUN song! Keep it coming!

    26. Joshua Duncan says:

I like the video, keep it up!!

    27. James says:

While we are online at the coffee shop or at home I have some theories about how we can improve our visibility:

Make sure that whenever you go to norml.org you go via a link from a well known website like google, yahoo, cnn, or fox. Don’t be shy about doing so multiple times daily.

This should help with website rankings on sites like this:

      http://scripts.ranking.com/data/details.aspx?theurl=norml.org
(make sure to click onto the traffic rank trend chart on this page)

      http://scripts.ranking.com/data/report_domain.aspx?theurl=norml.org

and at some point could appear on a site’s “popular searches” area.

      Smoke On!

    28. fla activist says:

oh, just in case i did not word that first text right,i waited till the week end to wake an bake as, i dont do that before work.i promised myself to be responsible about its use reguardless of the law.

    29. runlevel says:

      that was so stupid…

    30. Gemma Finch says:

Hahaaahaha. This is gold. It’s inspired me to go get Arj Barker tickets for his stand show in sydney in a fortnight..
Who is this Rob Cantrell? hilarious

    31. Kim says:

Great, this will do about as much for ending prohibition as Afroman did with ‘because i got high’. Ok, this video isn’t that bad.

    32. this kind of makes people who smoke and drink coffee seem like they rap with that rhythmically distraught style typical of inexperienced lyricists,or maybe i just was not that high or too….

    33. Lea says:

And I was being sarcastic in my last few words: “whatever it takes to rid our world of Prohibition is fine with me.”

NORML darling, take this down and please rethink the damage this could do to the movement.

    34. imformmmj says:

Would have expected to see this on somewhere like youtube, not norml. I check out norml to see the news on cannabis reform, specifically on medical marijuana. I believe once that hits mainstream we’ll have the support to fully legalize the herb.

[Editor’s note: Thanks for regularly checking out NORML’s webpage…which is NOT always about the news, law or science…it also readily covers culture regarding cannabis as well.

    35. Nick says:

      hahaha, i luv this =)

    36. Jahumba says:

I agreed wit the message but that music video was just awful, im embarrassed to call myself white

    37. Jr says:

      Not a Coffee drinker.

But I have found a Tall Redbull and Weed to be nice.

    38. Adam says:

Coffee makes my IBS symptoms act up and weed suppresses the symptoms. Thats why coffee and chronic is a good combination.

    39. Anonymous says:

Coffee and weed. Thats my breakfast too.

    40. mr reuben says:

Coffee and weed. Thats my breakfast too.

    41. AMY says:

      Like the video…….

    42. Cody says:

Love the combination of coffee and weed…every time I blaze up, if I have coffee around I will readily drink it. Gives the coffee a nice earthy taste in my opinion. The video was pretty cool, and they’re both awesome comedians. And I know this won’t hurt our cause, just keep it up NORML.

    43. B$ says:

Ehh. Funny but still just ehh. What’s up with this new “lets make a funny rap song” stuff?

It’s the lighter side of the pot scene for sure. Maybe not the best thing for NORML’s site but who wants all work and no play? At least it’s supposed to be funny. Remember, laughing with and laughing at are two different things. At least it’s not someone calling into a radio show telling folks why pot should be legal. “Yo dude… uh… haha. Pot should be legal because… uh… like… uh….” That is kind of stuff that doesn’t help the cause.

    44. General-Jake says:

Oh lighten up people. It was funny. If we get all stiff and
serious faced they wont be able to tell the stoners from the prohibitionists.

    45. Tav says:

I agree with some on here, specifically AP, who say that this is not appropriate for the site. What’s done is done, but when i first saw this, I thought that it was a horrible idea to put this on Norml. This is the site that many look to as the most reputable pro-cannabis organization. A video like this seems to attest to the stereotypes of “pot heads” as opposed to furthering the goal of helping others to understand the proper uses of cannabis. Not saying that the combination of Cannabis and Coffee is a bad one – but the combination of this video and Norml seems to be.

    46. wtf says:

even when your people are being killed in war soliders laugh and sing at times to releve the horrers theve seen and to releive stress .in viet nam we had a guy who would sing while we were being shot at .ok funs over now pick up your rifles and get back to why we are here .

    47. Lea says:

Well NORML, just doing a crude tally and discounting those who really didn’t say yea or nay, nine people liked it and 10 did not like it, one was on the fence.
Being a tad bit esoteric for a moment NORML, you can only see your own consciousness. It’s a universal law so to speak. With that said it’s understood that NORML people medicate and smoke marijuana whereas there are many who do not because of drug tests in the employment arena or are just being cautious because jail, lose of job, property and so on is not a option in their life.

There are those who throw caution to the wind and smoke weed. I really hope none of you get busted but we know better than that, and with the current financial climate, unless you have unlimited money, you’ll find yourself in an awful position.

Then there are those who truly need the medical marijuana and cannot get it for one reason or another. And again, with the current financial climate it’s difficult to up and move, let alone find a job in another state.

There’s nothing to lighten up about NORML when we are treated like criminals for wanting to smoke marijuana. There’s nothing about this video that furthers the cause of reform and when you step back for a moment it could well do damage. When cannabis is legal this would be appropriate for some.

Now, don’t bite my head off please, I’ve been with NORML for more years than I can remember. But if we’re not constantly pushing Prohibitionist into a corner with solid, credible facts vs. a video showing young adults smoking weed then we’re spinning our wheels.

[Editor's note: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."]

    48. David says:

Funny video but this is not going to help marijuana law reform.

[Editor's note: The video was not intended to help marijuana law reform...it is humor.]
