Upcoming Marijuana March Reaches Goal Of 300 Cities Worldwide

  • by Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director April 24, 2010

NORML hails the passage of another milestone for the Global Marijuana March with Georgetown, Guyana and Ryebrook, NY, as the 299th and 300th cities convening a march, rally, forum or benefit for the reform of cannabis laws on the weekends of Saturday May 1st and May 8th. NORML and numerous other reform groups called for more cities this year to participate so that organizers could meet and surpass their stated goal of more than 200 cities.2009glassglobe1-810x1024

Worldwide action is necessary for any outright legalization, since cannabis is largely prohibited globally by a United Nations treaty known as the Single Convention, enacted in 1962 through the efforts of top anti-cannabis zealot Harry Anslinger, the original instigator of U.S. cannabis prohibition in 1937. The U.S. Justice Dept. has cited the UN treaty as one of its principle arguments against medical cannabis rhetorically and Supreme Court cases.

Local NORML chapters are responsible for almost 40 of the protests in the U.S., New Zealand NORML is doing several cities; Norway “NORMAL” is not only marching in Oslo– they’re doing an international website at www.globalmarijuanamarch.com.

NORML welcomes the participation of pro-reform advocates of all stripes. Of course, we’d like you to join NORML, but this is an ecumenical effort to legalize cannabis once and for all. The important thing is to get more cities to participate before next weekend.

There’s still a few more days to call 212-677-7180 or email cnw@cures-not-wars.org to get your city on www.worldwidemarijuanamarch.org.

The Global Marijuana March has events planned in almost every time zone on six continents, including most of the capitols of Europe and South America. Many cities are already signing up for May 7, 2011.

NORML congratulates Cures-not-Wars and worldwide participants for organizing no less than a global march in favor of ending the expensive and failed prohibition of cannabis for responsible adult use. Contact your local and regional media outlets to make sure they cover this global day of protest as a major media event because this many citizens, in over 300 cities worldwide protesting their own governments is by definition a major media event.

Call 212-677-7180 or check the city-by-city listing to get specific information about your region’s march and/or to get your city on www.worldwidemarijuanamarch.org.

    15. I went through the list of cities and saw Savannah on there. I was wondering if that was Savannah, Georgia in the US or if it was some other Savannah. Im asking because Savannah, Georgia is my hometown and I really want to march but I haven’t heard anything about a march going down. If someone has some info that would help alleviate my ignorance please help me out.

    16. Gizmo says:

Thank all of you.I just got off of parole in Louisiana.
I was sentenced to 7 years in state prison for 3 baby MJ plants. I’ve had an accident when I was a kid I was run over by a car riding my bike home from school.I’m left in debilitating pain constantly.A failed spinal surgery, and because of cannabis prohibition,I’m stuck with a pain pill addiction that has done far more damage than cannabis could of ever done.

    17. Gizmo says:

      Legalize Freedom!!!

    18. BigZ says:

Thankfully there’s a couple cities close enough (an hour drive) for me to attend. I will proudly march.

    19. Stephen D. says:

    20. warren says:

What kind of a sad excuse is this single convention treaty when the idiots running this country broke every treaty they had with the American Indians. What a bunch of two faced liars.

    21. Aiki says:

We’ve got a few good midwestern spots, but we need more! If you live even remotely close to a march and you want to involve yourself with the cause beyond sitting on your couch reading NORML with a bong, then get out and move those legs! =)

Be a part of active history, so you can tell your grandchildren that you were there for the cause before it was legalized.

    22. Can you find a way to get Wyandotte Michigan to join in the world wide march. Michigan has a Medical Marijuana law, but I wish that the plant were legalized
and not just decriminalized or made a legal to those in need of medical Marijuana. I still wish people would call the plant by it’s prpper name, Cannibus Sativa. The plant that bears the true ownership of the name Maijuana is a heave tobbaoco plant in Mexico. William Randolf Hearst and cohorts were trying to run off competition to his milling indusrty from Hemp, and atempted to smear the good name of Hemp and Canibus Satitva he intentionaly confused the people, making both plants look the same and saying how monsterous the “drug” was. Hence “Refer Madness” was spawed. If your lawyer is any good, he can challenge any law that uses any name other than Canibus Sativa as the name for the plant in question, acording to the charges. The criminal case would have to be dropped on a technicality. I keep telling people this tecnicality, and they just keep allowing users to go to prison and do real time. Wake, they can be FREE!

    31. Plain wayne says:

As far as , Moscow….i doubt if anyone will be there . Liquor , tobacco and pharma got their Bull Crap propaganda to the Russian people that Marijuana is bad and their drugs are good . Problem is that the Russian people believe these lies and are killing themselves ( and others ) with their love and lust for Alcohol . Just outside Moscow is sign after sign promoting hard liquor . So many signs it should be illegal . Problem is that it’s working .

    32. REEL WITH A CAUSE says:

…Let the world go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans…[unwilling to witness or permit] the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed.”
      Oh John

That new generation of Americans were those who elected Oh John to office…Class of “57 with our “first time vote.” We had just won the “War against the squares,” we wanted “Change” and challenged authority for it. We were “Rebels without [with] a cause.” We had Camelot all raedy for a young couple who wanted “Change” as well. Oh John promised, delivered, and paid for it with his life. Obviously, it’s hazzardous to one’s health to pass a torch to anyone that’s [unwilling to witness or permit] anything “as a nation.” But, the message was received loud and clear Oh John.

What I got from it personally, when it was said, as I heard it [was] “Aren’t we supposed to be free from the control of government?”

The argument of human rights can be answered by the statements of two men.

The Constitution of the United States is the most wonderful work ever struck off at a given time by the brain and purpose of man. William Gladstone

[If] the Costitution cannot stretch itself to the measure of the times, it [must] be thrown off, and left behind, as a bye-gone device. Woodrow Wilson

Choose the one that fits [your] measure of the times…your here and now.

There are those [among us] that would not only disgard [our] Constitution – but – they would disgard [our] Bible as well. The fundamentals of both have, are, and always will be long endured as a [measure of the times]. Yet! there are those [among us] who would turn “We the People” into Godless, mindless servants whose only function is to bend to the master’s whip.

The only thing I have to say, which is really only two questions, which I’m compelled to ask are:

      1. Have you found another way to breath?
      2. Can the kids have a lemonade stand in the front yard?

    33. [...] event promises record numbers of cities, with 300 already signed up, according to activist group NORML, who says “The Global Marijuana March has events planned in almost every time zone on six [...]

    34. common_sense says:

Anyone find it alarming, that 4 short years after the big alcohol “liquid drug dealers” stopped killing police and anti-alcohol advocates , marijuana became illegal?
Has anyone ever seen Harry “The Anti-Christ” Anslinger drink any alcoholic beverages? I bet someone has. Which makes Harry a puppet for Big alcohol and a hypocrite , or just an idiot with a low IQ. Only a man that has taken a breath-test for alcohol and drug-screen ever day of his life should have the right to make such decisions. Which also should be law for all “high-level” government and military personnel . Alcohol was illegal for 13 short years.1920-1933. How many cops and civilians were killed in the name of liquid-idiot juice during that time? Marijuana has been illegal since 1937-2010.
The peaceful nature of marijuana users has been proven time and time again. And the Idiotic child abusing/molesting nature of alcoholics has been proven for even longer. I have challenged many anti-marijuana/pro-alcohol drunks to a “battle of drugs”. Since his drug is legal it should be easy for someone to drink a half gallon of whiskey in an hour, then do yard work after. (Since so many alcoholics get to keep there jobs). But so far only one would take me up on it. And I would have 1 gram of marijuana, since the government says it is so dangerous I should have only had 1/2 a gram. He ended up on the ground, of course, and I got bored and finished his yard work!! True Story by the way.

As far as these rally’s, tell the idiots in opposition tell them this for me. “Let him/her that has a lifetime of sobriety cast out the first stoner from society”.

The only way marijuana will ever be legal in our lifetime is if we show all the broken alcohol bottles on our roads and parks. We have to get people to tell about there childhood growing up with drunk parents. And if alcohol becomes illegal again, oh well, it won`t be any different to marijuana smokers because we have been under this law for over 70 years. The law should be simple, ANY substance that alters your mood, including alcohol and prescription drugs should either be legal or illegal. No more drunk controlled laws. No more rich pill pushers/liquid drug dealers saying what`s best for our children and us.

This government is taking away all of freedoms you refer to, that’s why there are tea parties. Well they are about to get a sizzling hot tea pot up their arss in November. We are going take back our country…
so…don’t let them run you out of town, or freedom. Hang in man…you are free, and [you] can prove it in Novemeber. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!

    45. Murch says:

      >>Rebel with a cause
The Tea Party is just those pussified Republicans doing whatever they can to take the country back from us. The whole world despises them. How they keep up their image here is beyond me. I hope and pray we maintain Democratic control until a third party can displace both of the current ones. It is the only chance for legalization. Get informed. http://www.democracynow.org

    47. REBEL WITH A CAUSE says:

      Murch

Good thinking! I’m an Individualist. Who knows what a Democrat or a Republican is anymore. It’s a war of Constitutional Conservativism v. Progressivism. It’s pretty simple. It’s easier to change one country than it is to change the rest of the world. The only problem with that is…I will fight to my death to protect freedom – and – my country…something lost in the idea sheep hearding. Stay well Murch, a difference of opinion is what makes this county great – and – keeps it free.

    48. Murch says:

      >> Couldn’t agree more. The ones who try to turn us against each other are the enemies of freedom. The morons like this pig who caused me further severe damage to my spine … his bread was buttered by the last administration. It makes me sad (and mad … which also makes me sad) that so many of the things we fought for all through the old days were turned back and now it is like the fifties all over again … the likelihood is it could take the rest of my life just to get to where we were before 2001.
