Washington Post: Can We Prescribe Medical Marijuana To Kids?

  • by Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director April 25, 2013

In another positive sign of the times for cannabis law reform, please find below a new video from the Washington Post’s The Fold looking at a couple of different situations where parents faced the legal-moral dilemma of whether or not to follow a physician’s recommendation for their young child to use cannabis as a therapeutic. Dr. Ben Whalley From Reading University in United Kingdom is interviewed about his recent cannabinoid research into the use of pediatric cannabis medicine for children, for example, suffering from epilepsy. As a twenty plus year reader of the Washington Post, it is very hard for me to imagine prior editors (and publishers) who would have assigned and widely broadcast a piece that looked at the potential health benefits from cannabis (meaning that as the World War II generation, informed by their government-created ‘Reefer Madness’, that largely ran the storied newspaper until recently has had to logically yield and defer to a decidedly more cannabis-informed generation of Baby Boomers and younger).

Im continually dumbfounded by the blatant refusal of people in the 21st Century to look at cannabis as something beneficial for all of us. Doctors refusing to study a plant with unknown properties and government refusing access for scientist and students to study such an amazing plant. We’ve lost our sense of direction with too many laws, rules and regulations. Mostly all for the name of profit. These guys are killing our pollinating life structure and laughing us all the way into our graves by exploiting the insurance of our elders life savings to hook them and our children on prescription pills. We’ve got to unveil this atrocious act against our human brothers and sister which is taking place now in a global context. Without a safe green take over we are doomed. Poor babies. God bless them

    2. However it is unnerving that the US government
      holds a patent on cannabis.
In the near future it will become the new wonderdrug
Not helped by the experts but by the common person.

    3. Yet we will give our children whatever those medical scientist can come up with….. let this generation be free to choose better remedies unlike their parents. Is a good thing there are still parents with some compassion and have finally opened their minds aswell. NAMASTE and best wishes to that beautiful child in the hands of that thing called freedom.

If a doctor can prescribe any medicine to a child then yes they should also prescribe Cannabis. Smoking is only one way of many to injest cannabis and is the only that is not for children. This is safer then most other and works better.

We’re seeing studies come out that refute the supposed developmental impacts of marijuana. While I don’t think we should be letting kids smoke or get high, I think that under doctor supervision this is probably a good thing.

I”m sure a lot of kids would benefit from additional research, not just those suffering from this disease.

The broad therapeutic potential of the plant astounds me. Here we see CBD driving the utility. Meanwhile, I recently read about the elderly being treated with high THC strains in assisted living communities. It’s good for alleviating depression in folks whose bodies are sliding into senescence. I use it to enhance my creativity and appreciation of the arts. All in all, I think this marijuana plant is a GOOD thing.

But, I guess you NORML fan already knew that, though.

no kid should be subscribed anything unless they have a life threatening illness. they are still developing, too many parents turn to pills to subdue their kids versus parenting them.

      Cannabis Laws=The American Holocaust.

Only idiots continue to hold on to the thought that cannabis has no medical value.

Question: Why does our country continue to fund a group that consists of idiots (i.e. The DEA)?
