Oregon: Governor Signs Measure to Expand State’s Medical Cannabis Program to Include Patients With Post Traumatic Stress

Democrat Gov. John Kitzhaber on Thursday signed legislation, Senate Bill 281, into law to allow patients with post-traumatic stress to be eligible to engage in the therapeutic use of cannabis.

The new Oregon law expands the state’s existing medical marijuana program, initially enacted by voters in 1998, to include post-traumatic stress as a state-qualified illness for which marijuana may be recommended.

To date, only three states – Connecticut, Delaware, and New Mexico – specifically allow for the use of cannabis to treat symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

Clinical trial data published in the May issue of the journal Molecular Psychiatry theorized that cannabinoid-based therapies would likely comprise the “next generation of evidence-based treatments for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).”

Post-traumatic stress syndrome is an anxiety disorder that is estimated to impact some eight million Americans annually. To date, there are no pharmaceutical treatments specifically designed or approved to target symptoms of PTSD.

  1. Combat Veteran who “discovered” cannibinoids after my docs recommended instructions. Many symptoms are helped with few if any extapyrimidal side effects. It actually “works” on what is wrong internally in my opinion. Nothing is perfect or a cure-all, groups, other vets, and a good support structure are a must.

If you need to talk to someone remember this number: 1800273-TALK. That’s the veterans crisis hotline and they are there 24/7. I’m a man and I called when I thought I had no other way out…don’t be afraid to ask for help, we’re here for each other.

  2. I have PTSD from being too close to an explosion right here in the USA. I’m not comparing myself to someone wounded in the service of our county in any other way, but a bomb in the face, much like a bullet hurts just as much weather it happened in Boston or Bahgdad. Pot is the only thing that helps. I can’t even remember the last time I smoked enough to get stoned ( insert one liners here). I smoke no more than 2 or 3 hits before bed, same way I enjoy one beer or wine with a meal but find nothing as unpleasant as being drunk.

  3. I must really call out mayor Bloomberg’s chronic tone deaf statement about medical utilization. Don’t we tolerate miscegenation by law? Why can’t one tolerate using cannabis for med or recreation

  4. At some point you may want your smart people to have the ability to give you money and ideas. I have spent hours trying to figure out how to do this. I can NOT be the only one…
