420: Take Action to End Prohibition!

  • by NORML April 20, 2017

    Happy 420 to all!

420 Marijuana Day of ActionNever in modern history has there existed greater public support for ending the nation’s nearly century-long experiment with marijuana prohibition and replacing it with regulation. The historic votes on Election Day 2016 — when a majority of voters in California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Nevada decided at the ballot box to regulate the adult use of marijuana, and several other states passed medical marijuana legalization laws — underscore this political reality., as do just-released polling data from CBS finding that a record high 61 percent of Americans say marijuana use should be legal.

It is time for the Congress, and your elected officials, to respect the will of the majority of American citizens.

Email your members of Congress and demand an end to federal prohibition.

At NORML, we started working to legalize marijuana in 1970, when only 12 percent of the public supported marijuana legalization. For several decades, as we gradually built support for our position, our political progress was modest at best. We decriminalized minor marijuana offenses in 11 states in the mid-1970s, following the release of the report of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse. But then the mood of the country turned more conservative (think Nancy Reagan, “Just Say NO,’ and the emergence of the parents’ movement) and we made little further statewide progress over the next 18 years. The tide turned in 1996 when California became the first state to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. Today, a total of 30 states now recognize medical marijuana by statute and eight states have legalized its adult use.

We’ve achieved these successes solely for one reason: the hard work and struggle of you and so many others

We need to continue the fight until no American is subject to arrest for responsibly consuming marijuana, so tell your member of Congress to end prohibition now.

Happy Holidays to you and your friends and family,

    The NORML Team

P.S. Our work is supported by thousands of people throughout the country as we work to advance marijuana reform in all 50 states and at the federal level. Can you kick in $4.20, $10 or $20 a month to help us keep going?

I no longer feel the United States Government nor its citizens believe in it’s own historical foundation of democracy and freedom. I really don’t see this trend changing anytime soon.

I really hate to burst your bubble but the corporate olicharch’s won centeries ago. Life is and illusion. Butch Trucks, I shall join you soon.

I hoped in my years on this Earth I would see some justice restored, releasing those brothers and sisters locked in cages for profit, all because of a plant.

I finally feel I’m ready to be free after 70 years on the sphere.

      Please continue my work.

      Fight on fellow freaks

      Freak power unite!

      Dale

Please support the right to die with dignity my friends. You might not understand it now, but someday you’ll be there too.

I wanted to share with all of you an email I received from Sen. Boozman of Arkansas. he’s another dinosaur that shouldn’t be re-elected in Arkansas.

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for medical marijuana. It is good to hear from you.

Many people believe that the widespread use of marijuana to relieve suffering would be medically advisable. I understand your support for legalization of medical marijuana. At the same time, I believe the designation of any substance as medicinal should follow established rules and science-based processes. As a member of the medical community, I am aware that many leading healthcare organizations, such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Cancer Society (ACS), have serious concerns about the medicinal use of marijuana. Many health experts argue that people who smoke marijuana are exposing themselves to a rather crude and potentially harmful drug delivery system. The smoke from a burning marijuana cigarette contains a variety of toxic chemicals that could be harmful, especially to users whose medical condition might be compromised further by choosing to smoke the drug for self-treatment.

I support research into the safety and effectiveness of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is believed to be the primary chemical component responsible for marijuana’s psychopharmacological effects. The federal government has appropriately provided grants for such studies. As a result of such research, dronabinol, the synthetic form of THC, has been available as an oral prescription drug since 1986 under its brand name “Marinol.” I respect your opinion, and I really appreciate the time you took to contact me. Please be assured I will keep your views in mind if legislation affecting this issue comes to the floor for a vote in the U.S. Senate.

Sincerely, John Boozman, U.S. Arkansas Senator

I’m digging the idea of a cannabis postage stamp for 1st class mail.

@Dale, you made me think about the image of cannabis users over the years. The classic stoner image of today would be the Furry Freak Brothers or Cheech and Chong. Before the 60s it was probably early beatniks, jazz musicians, as far as U.S. citizens go–marijuana smoking Mexicans in the U.S. then, too.

What about the straight-laced looking whites who remained in the cannabis closet from the start of cannabis prohibition to the present day? It makes me wonder about that Green Acres character Hank Kimball and if the writers meant for him to act like he was stoned inasmuch as he forgot what they were just talking about. He did it all the time, and he was supposed to be the county ag agent.

It’d be great if your county agricultural extension agent could actually help folks grow legal cannabis.

      @Dale,
Oligarchs (olicharchs notwithstanding) are granted power by those of us who will deny our own rights. What we vote for, what we purchase determines our government. It is our responsibility to educate our Congressman or there is no Democratic Republic. Click on the Act tab and participate. Believe me, your Reps are listening to their staff members who listen to US.
