Obama To Rolling Stone: We’re Not Going To Legalize Weed Anytime Soon

  • by Allen St. Pierre, Former NORML Executive Director April 25, 2012

    From Politico:

    President Obama clarified his position on medical marijuana in an interview with Rolling Stone, telling publisher Jann Wenner that he can’t “nullify congressional law.”

    “What I specifically said was that we were not going to prioritize prosecutions of persons who are using medical marijuana. I never made a commitment that somehow we were going to give carte blanche to large-scale producers and operators of marijuana – and the reason is, because it’s against federal law. I can’t nullify congressional law,” Obama said.

    “I can’t ask the Justice Department to say, ‘Ignore completely a federal law that’s on the books.’ What I can say is, ‘Use your prosecutorial discretion and properly prioritize your resources to go after things that are really doing folks damage.’ As a consequence, there haven’t been prosecutions of users of marijuana for medical purposes,” Obama said.

    Obama also said in a late night TV appearance Tuesday on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, that he didn’t expect Congress to change that law: “We’re not going to be legalizing weed … anytime soon.”

      Please don’t let his small words distract you from the issue. We are winning and he knows it so he is trying to make it sound like he’s compromising. He doesn’t understand we are way past only medical now. The people have spoken and they want full legalization. Obama says it won’t happen but can he ignore a vote if it came back with over 3/4 of the population against him? And now it is just starting to be talked about. We have intersting months ahead.

      First of all freedom1776… What planet do you live on where you don’t think marijuana isnt illegal. It doesn’t have to be banned in the constitution to make it illegal ..ignorance at its finest

      And even if the whole country passes state laws legalizing cannabis, the government can and probably will still consider it illegal

      Ass you can see that any person that becomes a leader in this country is a brown noser first before they become leaders then they become ass puppets rich people run this country and if any body who gets elected as a leader has to listen and do what they are told to do from that 1%. Thats why every body that gets elected never changes any thing.

      “”As a consequence, there haven’t been prosecutions of users of marijuana for medical purposes,” Obama said.”

      So has the federal government been busy prosecuting users of marijuana for recreational purposes?

      What was the point of promising “not to circumvent state laws” if users of all stripes are too small-fry to be on the feds’ radar?

    8. ancient wizard says:

      Obama is not being honest. He can appoint a new secretary of health and human servives who can reschedule cannabis. The process of scheduling is spelled out in the controlled substances act.

      @Freedom1776

      That word, legality, I don’t think you understand what it means.

    10. Michael E says:

      So its wrong for him to tell the justice department to lay off the medical marijuana users and producers because it goes against federal law, but it is perfectly fine for Justice department to not enforce the federal illegal immigration laws. Sick and tired of politicians picking and choosing what laws they want to be enforced while using the excuse that they cant pick and choose what they want to follow when it comes to something like this.
