Study: CBD Effective As Adjunctive Therapy For Psychosis

  • by Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director December 19, 2017

mj_researchThe daily administration of CBD (cannabidiol) as an adjunctive therapy mitigates psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, according to clinical trial data published online ahead of print in The American Journal of Psychiatry.

British researchers assessed the adjunctive use of CBD compared to placebo over a six-week period in a randomized trial of 88 schizophrenic patients. Participants ingested 1000mg of plant-derived CBD per day.

Subjects in the CBD treatment group “had lower levels of positive psychotic symptoms and were more likely to have been rated as improved and as not severely unwell by the treating clinician” at the conclusion of the trial. CBD administration was also associated with “improvements in cognitive performance and in the level of overall functioning,” although these changes did not reach statistical significance.

“These findings suggest that CBD has beneficial effects in patients with schizophrenia,” authors concluded. “As CBD’s effects do not appear to depend on dopamine receptor antagonism, this agent may represent a new class of treatment for the disorder.”

Results of the prior clinical trial published in the journal Translational Psychiatry determined that CBD is superior to amisulpride, a potent anti-psychotic agent, in mitigating psychotic symptoms in schizophrenic patients.

An abstract of the study, “Cannabidiol (CBD) as an adjunctive therapy in schizophrenia: A multicenter randomized controlled trial,” appears online here.

Weed helps keep me sane, that’s all I know.

        I’m so appreciative for this type of platform, it gives us all opportunity to openly share our experiences without fear of shame. It is no longer a news that there is permanent cure to schizophrenia. My daughter was diagnosed of schizophrenia 15 years ago, over those time, I spent more time in hospital than out of hospital without much improvement. It was difficult and humbling, but we’re so proud that we’ve done it all to save her, finally she sign herself into using CONSUMMO treatment. She now think more clearly. She has grown as a person in all facets of life. She more compassionate, intelligent, wise, sociable, and actionable!       Then Trump needs CBD;

      https://www.google.com.mx/amp/s/www.mensjournal.com/health-fitness/should-president-donald-trump-be-taking-propecia-w464526/amp/

      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/18354385/

Finasteride, the hair-loss prevention drug in propaceia which President Trump uses daily has increasing peer reviewed evidence to cause psychosis.
But through executive actions and appointments Trump has given authority to billionaires like the Sacklers of Purdue Pharma to outlaw CBD and whole plant cannabis.
Therefore the link above is clinical evidence that President Trump is unfit for office and must be deposed under the 25th amendment of the Constitution.

      • Mark Mitcham says:

That’s solid reasoning. And if that isn’t sufficient, add treason: Trump has betrayed, and is presently betraying, the USA to a hostile foreign power.

And also because he’s just an all-around general scumbag… If Trump publicly fist-fucked every Republican politician in the House and Senate like some kind of goddamn Caligula, they would still protect him. What does that make the Republicans? Nazis? Worse?

        • Julian says:

Saprophytic Traitors. It won’t take long for even the angriest, most fear-blinded Republican voters to realize how hard they’ve been “fisted,” to borrow your allusion. With the GOP Reverse-Robin-Hood-Tax Bill about to drop 11 million off their health care and the prohibitionist activities of too many Republicans from Jeff Sessions to Pete Sessions keeping us from the only effective whole plant remedy available to so many Americans, marijuana, the pendulum is about to swing for Democrats even further than we can imagine.

          • Mark Mitcham says:

I sincerely hope you’re right. My fear all along has been that Trump, at that point in time where he is about to lose power, will simply smash democracy completely (by declaring martial law, or starting a massive war, or dropping a big bomb on California, or assassinating all his rivals, or something worse I haven’t even thought of) to remain the dictator he has been ever since inauguration, only with more power.

That seems the most likely scenario to me. Unless The People stop him.

            • Mark Mitcham says:

I mean, look at Roy Moore of Alabama. That sumbitch STILL hasn’t conceded to Doug Jones, he’s STILL waiting to be installed into Power, by God or by Trump, whichever comes first!

              That’s some pathological shit!

          • Mark Mitcham says:

An article on Alternet suggests Dictator Trump may be blackmailing some other Republicans, like Lindsey Graham. Blackmail is standard operating procedure for Trump.

Lindsey Graham used to mock Trump, now he seems afraid of him. It seems many Republicans besides Trump are beholden to Russian “dark money” and don’t want us to know about it.

            • Mark Mitcham says:

Which leads me back to Dana Rohrabacher. The marijuana legalization community cannot afford to become indebted to Putin’s Russian-American crime syndicate! That’s no joke.

Please tell me it hasn’t happened already.

            • Julian says:

I am disturbed by the Russian spook ties to Rohrabacher as well, however we have to work with these wacky Libertarians where we can to reform marijuana policy. It is possible to support the Rohrabacher Blumenauer amendment and condemn his ties to Russia simultaneously. We need to be tactful and never stop researching or supporting good research.

      • Gumbo Joe says:

        Still hurting from the election?

        • Dain Bramage says:

          @ Gumbo Joe,
Not only are we hurting, we are major pissed off. Be advised we are coming for Trump, and anybody else around him.

Payback is a bitch, Gumby. Brace yourself.

    3. Fireweed says:

cannabis is an anti-inflammatory. Schizophrenia is an inflammatory response. It all totally makes sense.

    4. Bogdan Wawrzyszuk says:

Lets face the facts-“PRESIDENT TRUMP IS THE 2!ST. SCHIZZOID MAN”. A LOT OF BAD BAD KARMA FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. The highest dose of CBD oil could,nt help him. When the brain in a one track mode there is no hope, just non-reality of fantasy in his mind of being a so called President.

    5. Todd says:

Weed might be the only safe way to explore the depth and breadth of your own mind. And as with any exciting adventure in the great outback, there are challenges. The mental health issue called Schizophrenia is where the “walls talk to you”. But do not conclude it must therefore be a brain disorder, since we learned in public school that the brain only talks to itself. Importantly, the cure is not to write 100 times “the brain only talks to itself”. The cure is to relax and stop being your own brain’s computer technician. Stop being in charge of thought processes and the role your external environment plays in those thoughts. Consider that scientists have not shown thoughts are private experiences and they have not shown thought occurs in the brain. To say your whole life occurred inside a grapefruit sized volume (the brain) or that a grapefruit sized mechanical entity has awareness and feelings, are your privileged rights to question as facts, and not to be afraid to ask about or explore with weed.

      • Julian says:

I agree with you Todd that the major purpose of human coevolution with psychoactive whole plants, specifically marijuana, are to test the boundaries of thought, and may have contributed to the self-awareness and agricultural advances that created religions and civilizations after the last ice age. Thought most certainly does not belong confined behind our own minds or four walls and a classroom door from a private or public institution. Thought is fluid, travels through the 4th dimension of Time at the speed of light and exists multi-organic.

In fact, marijuana consumption gives us the introspection and perception to understand how the entire Universe “thinks” as a living, breathing macroorganism. And with more than 7 billion people on the planet, imagine how all life, from the most intelligent humans to the tiniest microbes reacts to a flood or a drought? Is that not collective thought?

I would caution you with this; no molecule, no microbe or element in this universe acts, thinks or exists in a vacuum. Even the fringes of our universe show signs of gravitational polarization from our sun, bending towards balance and “justice.”. To bring what I’m saying back to earth, CBD alone is not medicine as we were best coevolved to conceive it. No matter how our synthetic patent-for-profit prohibition works, basic chemistry tells us that raw elements cause side effects and collateral damage to our minds and bodies. CBD should not be synthesized or separated from other cannabinoids.

Plants, on the other hand, have us animals all figured out. CBD and THC work together to create homeostasis, a nuerological and physiological balance that often treats the core cause of disease. Just like our living Universe, we are components of a larger thought designed to sustain balance.

        • Dain Bramage says:

We were all born with limited, instinctive behavior designed, or evolved, for our survival, like sucking a tit and crying.

But everything else we had to learn.

We were born like mental sponges, awaiting a good soaking of ideas, and culture. From learning to speak, to wiping our ass, someone had to teach us that stuff, all of it! We’re taught the alphabet, we’re taught math. History. Science. We explore Art, and Philosophy.

It turns out that so little of who we are inside actually belongs to us as individuals; it’s more like water flowing down cascading pools, to use an easy metaphor.

          Like, wow, Scooby!

          • Julian says:

Going back to Todd’s original statement, marijuana isn’t the only “safe” psychoactive plant to test the boundaries of our thought, but it is certainly among the safest. Marijuana is nontoxic. We can’t overdose. Most medicine is based on dosage to control toxicity. Marijuana allows us to safely explore the strain that best suits our disposition.

And to add to your point, Dain, that “the rest we learn,” keep in mind that trying out plants for medicine and playing with psychoactive plants in our environment IS part of our instinctive behavior and genetic heritage, since we evolved from fish in the sea. Look at any dog or cat when they are sick or are just curious. They eat grass, plants or whatever they can find until they are either satisfied of their curiosity or healthy.

One more point I would like to make in regards of schizophrenia, or any contraversial inflammatory or neurodisruptive disease that has been blamed on marijuana with propaganda$… is that if you have schizophrenia, myocarditis or any family history if it, look for a strain of marijuana high in CBD and low in THC. Don’t seek some mislabeled “pure” CBD bottle… plants work in synergy with all their chemicals as we were intended to metabolize them.

The greater point I was trying to make is that we are made up of microorganisms that have to balance their existence within and around our bodies, and marijuana helps us achieve that balance, or “homeostasis.” Our “thought” belongs to microbes and bacteria in our brains and bodies in every way as much as our “thought” belongs to all life on our planet. If we smoke a bowl and look within, we may find the parameters of our thought… indeed our collective existence… are much broader than we ever imagined.

    6. Gina says:

Whole hearted im with Julian on this one. As humans we are not a bright bunch. Every civilization has gone extinct since the begining of time…
Yet the skip in the record stays the same…
Humans who by the way use less than 1% of our grapefruit size gray matter so says humans using that less than 1% of their brains…???
So dont need to mess with perfection. No need to seperate and recreate because we all know how that ends time and again. Just use it.
